Gallery 1036 - Heptonstall - a South Pennine village

The hilltop village of Heptonstall occupies a wonderful position high above Calderdale in the South Pennines. Surrounded by wild moorland the village has an impressive history and much to see and investigate. Many of the cottages date from the 17th and 18th centuries, the heyday of handloom weaving. During this period the village population reached 4000 and as can be seen from the grave stones many of its citizens acheived considerable wealth. The presenet day parish church stands close to the ruins of an earlier church. Not far away os one othe oldest Methodist Chapels in the UK built in 1764 with a foundation stone laid by John Wesley himself.
